Community Council Review

Scottish Borders Council will shortly begin reviewing how it works with community councils.
All community councils are currently governed by a Scheme of Establishment that sets out the purpose of community councils, how elections should be carried out, information required in constitutions and the area covered by each community council.
The current scheme came into force in 1997 when the former district council merged to form Scottish Borders Council.
The review is the chance for community councillors to shape the way for the future and share their experiences on what is working and what is not.
The review, expected to be completed next Spring, is being carried out by a working group that includes community councillors, Scottish Borders Councillors and Council officials. Each member of the group will bring their own knowledge and experiences to develop the new guidance.
Community councils are being encouraged either to join the working group or pass their comments on through Clare Malster, SBC Community Engagement Officer.
She explained, This review is the chance for us to work together to develop a new Scheme that meets all of our needs and aspirations. The revised scheme will be developed in partnership with the working group having a vital role to play in making sure that all views are represented.
More information about the review is available from Clare Malster at cmalster@scotborders.gov.uk or by telephoning 01835 826626 (directline).
